Born in 1943, Joyce endured a tumultuous childhood. After being sexually abused as a child, she left home at eighteen and married "the first young man who showed an interest." He was a fifth-grade dropout and part-time car salesman. Their marriage was a disaster.
At age twenty-one, she suffered a miscarriage. The next year she became pregnant again. But, severely depressed over her marriage and financial problems, she stopped eating and sleeping and started taking over-the-counter sleeping pills. Within months of her son's birth, Joyce decided she could no longer tolerate her husband's infidelities and trouble with the law, so she took her son and walked out. She returned to her parents' home and her days became what she describes as "a living hell."
In 1966, Joyce met David B. Meyer. They wed soon after and Dave quickly adopted her infant son. But happiness continued to elude her. In February 1976, out of frustration and desperation, Joyce began crying out to God. God answered, and Joyce's life was never the same again. Dave and Joyce's marriage is now more than thirty-five years strong, and they are the parents of four children.
That same year Joyce Meyer began teaching the Word of God, and entered full-time ministry in 1980. As an associate pastor at Life Christian Center in St. Louis, Missouri, she developed, coordinated, and taught a weekly meeting. After five years, the Lord brought it to a conclusion, directing her to establish her own ministry, which is now called Joyce Meyer Ministries.
Today, her teachings are enjoyed internationally, and she travels extensively conducting Joyce Meyer Ministries conferences.
Joyce Meyer believes that the call on her life is to establish believers in God's Word. Finding herself a Christian in need of victory many years ago, she discovered freedom to live victoriously through applying the Word. She believes that every person who walks in victory leads many others into victory.
Joyce openly talks about her abuse as a child, her failed first marriage, and her struggles over the years. Her life is transparent, and her teachings are practical and can be applied in everyday life.
She holds an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma and a PhD in Theology from Life Christian University in Tampa, Florida.
Joyce Meyer is an incredible testimony of the dynamic, saving work of Jesus Christ. She believes and teaches that no matter anyone's background or mistakes, God has a place for them and can help them on their path to enjoying everyday life.
