The gospel trio, The Williams Brothers, has done it all, from performing in the country setting of the Grand Ole Opry to Madison Square Garden in the Big Apple. The trio has appeared with superstar balladeer, Luther Vandross, and the funky soul of Kool & the Gang. They have recorded for record labels and have formed their own record label. Pretty good for country boys from Smithdale, Mississippi. They dazzle crowds with traditional gospel sounds and attract younger folks with a more contemporary sound, and all is done for their love of God.
Growing up in the church, the brothers loved to sing, so their father Leon "Pop" Williams formed the group in 1960. Since the boys were so young, the group name started out as the Little Williams Brothers. As the brothers grew in experience and age, their name became the Sensational Williams Brothers. In 1970, the Brothers decided it was time to start writing and arranging their own music. This proved to be a valuable move. A few years later, they recorded their debut album, Help Us Jesus, Help Us Lord, and released it a year later.
Later in the '70s, the Brothers made another smart move. They took over producing all their work. They've had three number one records and a Grammy nomination, plus more than 16 of their albums have appeared in the Top 10 in Cashbox and Billboards magazines. The year 1991 was a good one for The Williams Brothers.
They were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Album, they formed their own record label, Blackberry Records, and they released This Is Your Night, the label's first release. It shot to number four on Billboard magazine's gospel chart. Blackberry was the first African American owned and operated record label in Mississippi with major distribution.
